KC Willis Marketing Mindset

Navigating the Art Market

A comprehensive video workshop series designed to help artists get their name and their work in front of the public.

How This Will Work

Marketing Mindset is something I am very excited about. I love to teach and I love to share. Up 'til now, teaching has always been about my techniques and how I make my work. During my workshops, whether they're on-line or in person at my studio in Colorado, the question of marketing comes up time and time again. Such a simple word: marketing...but there is so much to it. I will cover marketing issues that you will face if you are in the midst of an art career and I will cover the basics for all those who are just getting started. I have been both places.

I have had successful careers as a writer/publicist in the entertainment industry, marketing luxury real estate and for the past decade I have been focused on making a name for myself and my work in the art market. In the first two years of making my fabric collage art I was featured on HGTV, had my work added to the permanent collection of a major museum and had a one-woman show in Soho in New York City. That didn't happen by accident.

And in the years since then, my work has been placed in shops and galleries all over the country (I am currently in about 50), 3 catalogs, 2 museums and thousands of private collections around the world. I make and sell over 1000 pieces a year. My work has been made into a greeting card line with Leanin' Tree, licensed to the Lennox Group, written about in newspapers and magazines and published in several art books. Last year some of my work was featured in a show in Rome, Italy and was one of the winners of a national art competition during the 2008 election. Needless to say this has all been exciting...but it has been hard work and marketing is always at the forefront of my thoughts and plans.

And while I can not guarantee this kind of success will happen for you, I can promise to share with you what I know. You do not need a degree in marketing to market smartly and successfully. You just have to have a marketing mindset.

In the series of videos, on-line discussions and live chats that will make up this workshop, and that you will have access to once you pay the workshop fee below, you will learn about things like:

• Creating a cohesive, signature look
• Working in series
• Consignment vs. wholesale
• Pricing your work
• The differences between approaching a gallery, a shop, an on-line retailer or a catalog
• Using Social Networks
• PR-how to get written about in newspapers and magazines
• Marketing your work without leaving home
• The Pros and Cons of having an Artist's Rep.
• Researching your market
• Licensing your work and your name.
• Blogs vs. Websites
• Selling on-line
• Keeping motivated
• Becoming fearless
• And soooooo much more.

So whether your goal is a national audience in fine art galleries or a bustling internet business for your crafts...you need the fearless attitudes and focused plans of the proper marketing mindset.

An Investment in Your Future

The intent of this workshop is to get you going with some new ideas and a structure for your marketing in 2010. I will have the first series of videos up the first week of January or so, with additional ones added every month until we have covered everything. The Deciding Factor

Everyday we make a bazillion decisions in our life. I made one when I sat down to write this blog post. When you go to the grocery store you have to make lots of decisions. You don't fill up six carts with everything in the store that appealed to you...at least I don't think you do. You decide what is on the menu for the week and what things are the best items for your nutritional needs. You make a decision or two.

And so it is with your art. In my workshops artists are always saying that they… Continue

I'm just sayin'....

From my blog at www.kcwillis.blogspot.com

When it comes to your art...the decisions you make today will affect where you are 5 years from now....heck 5 months from now. Back when I was wanting to be a novelist (I still wanna be one) I loooved to come home from my day job in Los Angeles, put my feet up and watch television. Anybody who had sat in LA traffic for a hundred hours would want to do the same. But I also wanted to finish my book and see w… Continue

To Market...To Market.

Ok...here's what I'm thinking....

Judging from the e-mails I receive every week from artists and want-to-be-artists from all over the country, I would have to say that marketing is a big concern for many. Marketing, productivity, creating a signature look...all that good stuff. There is the creative side to this business and there is the business side to this business. Mostly you just want to know how did I go from that first gallery or shop that carried my work to being in 50 shops, 3 catalogs… Continue

Collage Camp Commercial

This little 43 second commercial was made to spread the word about KC Willis Collage Camp. It has been viewed thousands of times and was instrumental in launching my on-line workshop.

And the People Said...

"KC Willis is a true gem of a person, artist, teacher and friend! The workshop that I took with her was the most incredible workshop that I have ever taken and I have taken a lot of workshops! KC is very real and forthright with her knowledge of art and marketing but more special is her compassion for the individual. She is a very good teacher and I had a really phenomenal time " Jacquie Stone

" The opportunity to work with KC is a treat not to be missed – you will feel her passion for her subjects and be delighted by her wit and teaching style. Regardless of your level of skill and experience, you will be enriched by the experience." Elaine Schwanke

"I went into the workshop with no expectations, just the hope of creating something to take home. I came away from the workshop with so much more. I received the gifts of inspiration, support and friendship. I left invigorated—artistically and spiritually. KC is a masterful and humorous storyteller. She not only invited me into her journey, but her generosity of self was so touching." Stephanie Dascola

"An awesome class. You have a gift." Venita Hawkins-Bird
